Two houses in Union City acquired by the Erie County Land Bank could be for sale, while another house is slated for demolition.

Erie News Now has learned that the demolition bid will be awarded next week to tear down the long vacant historic Girard Hotel.

The Erie County Land Bank, which operates in areas outside of the city of Erie, has acquired 12 properties over the past nine months and has demolished buildings on two of them.

A tree fell on the property of 64 Market Street, which was totaled by insurance. It was then donated to the Erie County Land Bank for blight removal.

The Erie County Land Bank was created in 2018 with a purpose of acquiring, holding and transferring interest in real property throughout Erie County. The Erie County Land Bank deals with blighted, vacant and deteriorated property in a stabilizing way, said Christie Mahany, Erie County Land Bank coordinator.

Mahany, 38, says her understanding of the local market — and the effect blighted properties have on it — prepared her for her new job as coordinator of the year-old Erie County Land Bank, which is under the direction of the Erie County Department of Planning & Community Development.
